The Build: Crafting a Multi-Level Oasis
DECKCREW.CA started this project by listening closely to the client’s vision and plan they had for their deck. Then, they carefully reviewed their plan, offered improvements, finalized the materials, and set out to get started on building.
Within one month, the team at DECKCREW.CA transformed this backyard, nestled between close neighbouring homes, and created an outdoor retreat that feels bright and spacious. By cleverly designing the deck with multiple levels, they’ve not only made the space feel larger but also enhanced the sense of privacy, making the proximity of the neighbors less noticeable. The large tree could have been seen as a major obstacle. Instead, it was skillfully incorporated into the design by cutting the PVC deck boards and allowing it to naturally pass through.
The Materials: Blending Wood and PVC
The client behind this winning project was looking for a decking surface that requires minimal upkeep and doesn’t compromise on style or quality. They landed on PVC decking, known for it’s durability and low-maintenance properties. DECKCREW.CA installed Azek PVC decking in the beautiful colour Coastline from their vintage collection. You can explore this product here.
This design was thoughtfully planned using the PVC materials in high-traffic areas like the main deck surface and stairs while reserving pressure-treated wood for the substructure and cedar for the storage space and privacy fences.
Blending the materials is a smart approach to ensure durability and less maintenance all while keeping the project more budget-friendly. Plus, the clients of this project loved the smell of the cedar wood, which added an extra layer of charm to their outdoor space!
The Features: Innovative Storage and Stylish Privacy
Hidden Deck Storage
Storage can often be a challenge in any household, but DECKCREW.CA found an innovative way to seamlessly incorporate it into the deck design. By adding hidden storage underneath the elevated deck, they transformed what would normally be wasted space into a highly functional area. The discreet doors blend into the deck, maintaining its sleek design. This feature not only adds convenience but increases the usable backyard space. The result is a polished, and clutter-free backyard.
Privacy Fence
The cedar privacy fences on this deck are another beautifully designed feature. Not only does it enhance the sense of seclusion, especially in a backyard with close neighbours, but it also adds a layer of style and functionality to the space. The privacy fence creates a more intimate atmosphere but also can be used to personalize the space. The fences can be customized with hanging plants, outdoor lighting, or even wall art to create a welcoming, visually appealing outdoor environment. Additionally, the fences offer a sense of wind protection, making the deck more comfortable on those breezy days. This multifunctional feature adds both aesthetic appeal and practicality, making it a valuable element of the overall design of the deck.
Wider Stair Tread
DECKCREW.CA designed the stairs with both function and style in mind, be building wider-than-usual treads for added comfort. These broader steps not only add visual appeal, giving the deck a more elevated look, but they also seem to provide a gradual descent, creating a safer and more spacious feel.
Tree Preservation
As stated above, DECKCREW.CA decided to preserve the tree by cutting the PVC deckboards surrounding it. This thoughtful touch not only preserved the tree but added a unique visual element almost like an outdoor art piece. Since the tree is positioned to the side of the yard it doesn’t take away from the usable space. In fact, it enhances privacy, turning what could have been a design challenge into an asset.

Composite Decking
Composite Decking is typically made from a combination of wood fibers and recycled plastic. The blend of these materials gives composite decking the natural look of wood while enhancing it’s durability.
PVC Decking (Polyvinyl Chloride)
PVC decking is made entirely of plastic, typically virgin vinyl or PVC (polyvinyl chloride), which gives it superior water resistance. PVC tends to be more expensive than pressure-treated lumber and composite decking due to its high durability and water resistance. However, it does make a worthwhile investment for many outdoor projects.
For those looking to use composite or PVC decking while still staying within a certain budget, a smart approach is to combine it with pressure-treated lumber or cedar as seen in this deck by DECKCREW.CA.
Pressure Treated Lumber
Pressure-treated lumber is a popular choice for outdoor decking due to its cost-effectiveness and durability. Treated with protective chemicals under high pressure to protect it from rot, insects, and decay, making it a great choice for outdoor structures like decks and fences.
