ATTENTION HOMEOWNERS: Ontario's Home Renovations Are Looking Bright Green!
As part of the Government of Ontario’s Home Renovation Savings Program – launched January 28 2025, homeowners can now save when purchasing eco-friendly building materials.
The program was launched in an effort to make Ontario more energy-efficient and resilient, choosing sustainable, energy-efficient materials is now a cost-effective and rewarding option for homeowners.
Some energy-efficient building materials you can save on include:
Insulation
Insulation does more than keeping the cold out. It also helps reduce the need for propane, fuel, electricity, and natural gases to heat and cool your home. Plus, some types of insulation, like fiberglass, are made from recycled materials, making them an eco-friendly choice for both your home renovations and the planet! Under Ontario's Home Renovation Savings Program, homeowners can receive rebates of up to $8,900 for insulation upgrades.
Proper Insulation and Ice Dams
Many homes in the Greater Toronto Area are older than 15 years – yours might be one of them, which means that they no longer meet best-in-class requirements for insulation. For instance, the standard R-Value for roof insulation has gone up from R-50 to R-60, and yet not all these homes have been renovated to meet this requirement.
As a result, this can lead to problems like ice dams which can form and damage the walls, ceilings, and insulation, of one’s home overtime. Ice dams form when the heat from your home escapes into the attic, melting the snow on the roof. Some of this water then re-freezes and traps the remainder of the water, which can then leak into the home and cause this unwanted damage.

Doors & Windows
Replacing your doors and windows with Energy Star Certified Doors will make you eligible for up to $250 back per rough opening. Using these certified doors and windows will save you money over the long run as your furnace and air conditioning won’t need to work overtime. These energy-efficient doors and windows trap air inside, keeping your house warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.
Solar Panels
Solar panels can help you save money by using the sun’s energy to generate electricity. In the long run, having solar panels installed in your home will reduce the need for the use of non-renewable sources, reducing fossil fuel emissions in the long run. The Ontario Home Renovations Savings Program will be giving up to $5000 back for installing these in your home, creating an affordable option for your home renovation.
Smart Thermostats
Installing a smart thermostat in your home helps regulate the temperature through the day. Being able to monitor and adjust settings with your smartphone can reduce energy consumption when your home is empty, lowering your utility bills over time. Ontario’s Home Renovation Savings Program offers up to $50 in rebates for installing a smart thermostat, making it a smart choice for your home and your savings.
